This blog originally began as reflections on Americans made while spending a year studying in Boston. After a brief spell back in the UK (at the request of the Department of Homeland Security) living in a tumbledown factory-cum-squat in East London and working to further the interests of dubious Chinese capitalists I am now living in Oakland California studying doing PhD in modern British history at UC Berkeley. I am interested in gentrification, cities in general, the history of every day life and the impossible task of reconciling postmodern ideas about identity and relativism with meaningful class-centered left wing politics. I also hate David Cameron.
The title of the blog comes from the David Lodge novel Changing Places - a wonderful 60s comedy about the difference between British and American universities.
